  • About 4.1 million people live in the Montréal census metropolitan area (CMA). The Montréal CMA represents 50% of the province’s population and includes the Island of Montréal as well as cities on the North and South shores of the island.
  • With its 1.9 million inhabitants, the Island of Montréal is Québec’s biggest city (24% of the province’s population).

  • Montréal is comprised of 870,000 households, including 485,000 families. Over 60% of families have children, out of which almost one third is a single-parent family.

  • Wealth is unevenly distributed across the population. At the top of the economic pyramid, 21% of households have annual incomes over $100 000; at the bottom, 16% of households live on less than $20,000 a year. In Montréal, 18% of the population lived under the low-income cutoff in 2016.

  • About 34% of the commuters in Montréal take the bus or Metro, which make it the second most frequent mode of commuting among the employed labor force. The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) reported 416.2 million rides in 2016.
  • Cycling comes 3rd with 4.6% while walking represents less than 1%.
