This OPUS issue deals with outdoor recreational infrastructures. Such infrastructures give free access to the public and allow recreational or sport activities that answer residents’ needs. This issue is for public health practitioners, municipal organizations or any actor involved with managing such infrastructures. The issue presents the benefits of outdoor recreational infrastructures for health and well-being as well as key factors associated with the optimal conception and use of these infrastructures. Examples of designs are given and a variety of tools are proposed.

The OPUS collection is one of the means deployed by the INSPQ reference centre on built environment and health, the Centre de référence sur l’environnement bâti et la santé (CREBS), in order to make expertise on built environment and health available to the Québec health network and other key partners. This is a knowledge transfer initiative aiming at informing practitioners’ and decision-makers’ choices and at encouraging best practices in the development of healthy and safe built environments.
